Program Committee Report

M. Pilch reported for the TPC. N. Kurul, M. Bertodano, and Y. Khalil have been working on a web based system that is initially focused on performing electronic reviews of summaries. The 1998 Winter Meeting was targeted as the first demonstration of the capability.

M. Podowski reported that the NHTC is considering electronic publication of their proceedings. The THD/PC expressed a strong desire to move in this direction since our proceedings are losing money for the ANS. The THD/PC authorized M. Podowski to represent the THD/PC desires with the NHTC.

J. Reyes proposed organizing a panel session titled Archiving of Thermal Hydraulic Data at the 1998 Winter Meeting.

M. Pilch will formally write V. Schrock a letter on behalf of Nuclear Technology offering to publish full length papers without additional review if NURETH-9 endorses the paper to be of archival quality.

International Topicals

NURETH-8 was considered a successful conference; but once again, profit for the THD proved elusive. V. Schrock reported to the THD/PC on NURETH-9. A technical program committee has been established and session titles and organizers have been identified.

Honors and Awards

Professor George Yadigaroglu was presented with the THD Technical Achievement Award for 1997. His citation reads:

"In recognition of his many unique scientific contributions in thermal hydraulics, multi-phase flow, and reactor safety and his impact on the international technical community as an educator, researcher, editor, and outstanding leader promoting deep physical understanding and technical excellence."

Nominating Committee

J. Reyes will chair the nominating committee next year. Nominees for Executive Committee offices are:

Vice Chair - F. B. Cheung

Secretary - N. Kurul

Treasurer - M. Bertodano

Membership - B. Jones

Membership

B. Martin and S. Sloan were approved as members of the THD/PC.

W. Wulff stepped down from his position as Division Representative to the National Program Committee (NPC). The nominating committee could not identify a qualified candidate to fill the position full time. The THD/EC approved T. K. Larson as acting, temporary representative to the NPC. Committee members are asked to help Larson in any way possible to minimize the burden of this demanding assignment.

Old Business

R. E. Henry lead discussions on his vision of dynamic benchmarking of codes. The goal is to capture thermal hydraulic data that is eroding away by "hardwiring" information and results of key tests directly in code subroutines. R. E. Henry will organize an ad hoc committee of interested THD and MCD members to investigate the issue.

New Business

The University of Texas has requested $500 from the THD to support a student conference. The THD/EC approved sending $300.
